BACHELOR OF PHYSIOTHERAPY (BPT)

Current Scenario:
Physiotherapy, or Physical Therapy, is a profession concerned with the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the physical function and performance of the body. It is a distinct form of care that can be provided in isolation or in conjunction with other types of medical management. Used in conjunction with certain medical or surgical techniques, physiotherapy can complement these techniques to help provide a speedy and complication-free return to normal activity.

Physiotherapy can be useful in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of injuries, diseases processes, and other conditions including sports injuries, spinal cord injuries, chronic airways disease, back and neck pain, postural problems, rehabilitation following cardiac surgery, stroke rehabilitation, occupational injuries, arthritis, asthma management etc.

Future Prospects:

A common misconception is that physiotherapists only deal with injuries to backs, necks, joints, muscles and other 'sports' type injuries. While many physios certainly do treat these types of conditions, there are other areas in which physiotherapists are trained and can help you.

Physiotherapy can be divided into three broad areas:

  1. Musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  2. Cardiothoracic physiotherapy
  3. Neurological physiotherapy

The future holds bright prospects for physiotherapists as the number of people with such problems is increasing day by day at an alarming rate owing to the changing lifestyle of the people in cities and towns. With more and more people falling prey to the change, the lack of physical activity and an overwhelming reliance on technology has been playing spoilsport with their health. This in turn transcends into a physical nightmare for such people that the physiotherapist can get them rid of.

Who should go for it:

If one chooses to enter this field, he/she should be prepared to work for long hours that may extend longer than the normal definition of usual. The work is challenging, and the work hours are long and hard. Be prepared to face the challenge. Also, the physio has to be very patient as some cases may not respond to immediate treatment. The person should also have good inter-personal skills.

Duration: 4 and 1/2 Years

Eligibility Conditions: Pass in 12th class of 10+2 pattern or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in physics, chemistry and biology (including practical) provided the candidate has passed in each subject separately.
