The
Indraprastha University has its distinction of being the first
University in the country to start a Master's program in Environmental
Management (M.Sc.) in the School of Environment Management.
The objective of two years intensive program is to provide
an integrated multidisciplinary study of a wide range of Environment
related issues and their management. The program consists
of comprehensive lectures on course and topics of current
interest and importance, field and laboratory experiments
and case studies of special interest related to Environmental
Management program.
OUR
MISSION
To build a pool of trained and dedicated professionals
who can contribute to the development of policies, measures
and programmes for environmental management.
The
School of Environment Management was set up essentially to
tackle the problems that human kind is likely to face in the
years ahead on account of gradual depletion of earth's limited
resources, and the existing method of their use, which lead
to increasing pollution. The mission of the department therefore,
is to find solutions to a variety of such problems and to
train the future generations to handle them effectively.
Every year the School imparts training to 20 students, which
leads to their Post Graduate Degree in Environment Management.
The students with graduation in Sciences are selected through
an Entrance Examination. The students undergo an intensive
training for two years, which is divided in four semesters.
The Course Curriculum has been designed to produce effective
and efficient managers and professionals with environmental
responsibility in business, industry and public sector. The
curriculum is designed and revised with continuous feedback
from various eminent experts from Universities, Research Institutions
and Industries. The course lays emphasis on equitable and
efficient distribution of natural resources and its management
for sustainable development.

Infrastructure
Besides
excellent communication facilities and computer support, the
department has established a well equipped laboratory for
carrying out air, water and soil analysis. Air quality models,
water quality models, Remote Sensing & GIS etc are some of
the tools which would be used by the department as and when
needed. To have an effective functioning of entire programme
the department will have collaboration with various national
and international institutions and organizations for advanced
studies including research programmes.
ENVIRONMENT
MANAGEMENT
The
scientific and engineering community has made a major contribution
to the health and well-being of mankind by developing potential
of an earth rich in natural resources. However, there is a
new, pressing challenge created by the adverse effects of
depletion of planetary resources, environmental pollution,
rapid population growth and damage to the fragile eco-systems
through which life on Earth can survive. The technological
growth essential to social, economic and cultural advance
should ensure sustainability of development by conserving
and enhancing environment. Within the concept of sustainable
development there is recognition of the inherent conflict
between conservation of the environment and our present path
of development. Resolving that conflict is the task which
confronts us all. We clearly cannot maintain the quality of
human development if we continue to degrade the environment;
but equally we cannot renounce industrial development in favour
of environmental protection. The management of these two conflicting
objectives is what is called environmental management. It
has become imperative that resource conservation and environmental
protection must now become a part of overall management as
Environmental Management System to be adopted as a strategy
by the enterprise for meeting the expectations of the society
as well as sustainable growth. Not only this but Environmental
Management System must take cognisance of nature, not infinitum
but finitum.
In
India the issues of sustainable development and management
of the country's natural resources have placed environment
issues on the agenda of government, private sectors and non-government
organisations. These issues are increasingly important with
the process of the liberalisation of economic policies and
expansion of the Indian economy.
The
achievement of more sustainable and equitable development
requires effective environmental policies, plans and programmes;
the full integration of environmental, social and economic
issues with development and project planning; and the adoption
of effective and efficient environmental management systems
and technologies by the private sector. There is therefore
an urgent need to harness the talent of the science/engineering
graduates to develop the necessary skills in environmental
management.
THE
SCHOOL
The
School of Environment Management has been established to fulfill
the above mentioned requirements and offers a two-year Master's
degree course in Environment Management which aims to equip
the budding environmental managers with a comprehensive understanding
of the key environmental issues, and use of a wide range of
environmental tools, methods and systems so that they can
play leading role in the development and application of environmental
policies and management in the public and private sectors.
The present intake for the course is of 20 students, from
Science/Engineering background, that are selected through
a National Level Common Entrance Examination.
OBJECTIVES
To
provide institutionalized quality education and training in
environmental studies.
- To
pursue and facilitate research and development activities.
- To
establish working linkages with industry and undertake collaborative
projects which offer long-term interaction opportunities
with academia and industry.
- To
conduct short-term courses related to various environmental
issues.
- To
foster environmental awareness and promote the principles
and practices of sustainable development.
THE
COURSE
Master of Environment Management (MEM)
The
four-semester course offered by the school consists of an
optimal amalgamation of theory and practice. First three semesters
are devoted to course work and the final semester is dedicated
to Dissertation that each student is required to accomplish
individually. Students are also provided the opportunity to
undergo practical training during their summer vacations in
various institutions
INFRASTRUCTURE
& LABORATORIES
The
school has well equipped laboratories for air and noise pollution
monitoring, water quality analysis, microbial technology and
a centre for advanced environmental instrumentation systems,
which house the latest and sophisticated state-of-the-art
instruments. The school also has a separate section for remote
sensing and geographical information systems. The centre for
advanced environmental instrumentation systems recently inaugurated
by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has equipments such as the atomic
absorption spectrophotometer, gas liquid chromatograph etc.
for heavy metals and pesticides analysis.
TRAINING
AND PLACEMENT
The
school has been able to establish working linkages with various
government organizations, like the Department of Space, Ministry
of Environment & Forest, Central Pollution Control Board,
Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Delhi Development Authority,
Industries, Non-Governmental Organizations and Consultancy
Organizations, working in similar fields. The first and the
second batch students had undergone their summer training
in organizations like Maruti Udyog Ltd., Engineers India Ltd.,
Mother Dairy, National Fertiliser Ltd., Tata Energy Research
Institute, RM Software International etc. The feedback of
our students from these institutions was found to be excellent.
THE
FACULTY
Environmental
Studies require multidisciplinary skills. The skills and strength
of the school is reflected in its highly qualified, experienced
and dedicated team of professionals from various disciplines.
In addition, the school also invites professionals from various
institutions and universities as guest faculty
